JCSS Announces 2026 STAR Students, Teachers

The Jackson County School System has announced its 2026 STAR Students and Teachers. East Jackson High School is represented by a pair of students, who tied for the honor, in Courtney Cameron and Hudson Wilbanks, while Jackson County High School is represented by Julia Crowthers.

Cameron selected Ms. Linda Frederick as her STAR Teacher, an honor that is selected by the student and given to a student's most influential teacher. Wilbanks selected Mr. Michael Shawler, while Crowthers selected Mr. Steven Bowles.

The STAR Student must meet several criteria, including having the highest SAT score at their school on any single test date through November of their senior year, and being in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade-point average. The STAR Student then selects the STAR Teacher, an educator who has made an impact in the educational experience of the student. After being named the school-level winner, the student and staff member move on to a regional competition.

Frederick has previously been named a STAR Teacher in a nearby school system, while Shawler was named a STAR Teacher two years ago while teaching at EJHS. Bowles has been selected as the STAR Teacher eight times.
